Wondering where to shop?
If you are tired of trying to find someone to help you at the big box stores or at the larger nurseries, consider visiting a few of the smaller nurseries in town.  They often times
will not only take the time to assist you in any manner in which possible, but
to my surprise, carry certain
perennials and shrubs I have not seen in the larger outlets.  That said if you tend to 'shop' the smaller nurseries
and are looking for something specific and it's not the beginning of the
season anymore, it is far more likely they will make an effort to accommodate.  Prices are always favorable towards you and the quality is excellent, so visit ...
Bud's Greenhouse Ltd.
1067 Autumnwood at Cottonwood in Windsor Park or call
255-1709 and ask for Brent or Sandy;
it will be worth your while.
Looking for something special.
Call them.

My friends, Ron and Leigh Holland are Winnipeg artisans who create beautiful and unique hand crafted birdhouses and  feeders using old barn board, recycled hardware, often mounting them on antique farm tools.
Their bird houses are built to last, have removeable bottoms for cleaning and each and everyone is utterly unique.
These birdhouses can be found at The Garden Room on Academy Rd, Jensen's Nursery on McGillivray and
La Coste on St. Mary's Rd, or by contacting me.

For a great solution to a no-grass
low maintenance yard, or just well behaved,
moisture retaining, weed-free gardens,
consider real mulched wood.  No unnaturally coloredshredded pallets; just the look,
feel and smell of a freshly cut tree.  So call

This is Hydrangea 'Limelight'.  It bloomed beautifully last year (08). Today, Aug 21/09, I found a tiny bud on one branch.  It's grown 3 times its size from last year but ONE flower head?
Who knows?  I certainly don't!!!!

Change is always happening.  Perhaps it is one of the reasons why we love gardening so much.  It is NEVER, EVER static.  This old Tuxedo garden is a never ending surprise and
always a delight to the owners.  See the rather tall, pink flowers in the back; last year they    had heads more than 12" across and still stood despite the wind and rain.  This year, at Arbo Flora Flower Shop & Garden Centre - 650 St Anne's Road, I was able to find this particular variety of my friend "Joe Pye (weed)" and planted them in new gardens. There they stand,
a single plant from a 4" pot, as 8' tall specimens. It's one of those plants that will grow
in wet, shady areas but will also perform brilliantly in dry, sunny areas. Invite 'Joe' and you will invite butterflies into your garden!
It may not be global warming but global change; something is definately up!

"You aren't really going to connect with nature unless you create a destination. "Destination design is really
the future of gardening".   Most of us spend at least 1/3 of the year inside; it's too cold, wet, whatever!
Create a space outside, an extension of your home so the beauty that is summer
(we're optimists, remember) can be enjoyed by being in it literally, or at least by having the vision
through the window!  Come on out and play in the mud.  But if that mud is IN your garden,
then maybe just walk by walking on it compacts it and makess your hard to work with soil, worse.

Rhus aromatica 'Gro-Low'
Fragrant Sumac: This fragrant sumac cultivar is a dense, low-growing, rambling shrub which spreads by root suckers and typically grows only to 1-2' tall but spreads to 8' wide. Trifoliate, medium green leaves turn attractive shades of orange and red in autumn. Leaves and twigs are aromatic when bruised (hence the species name). Leaves are smaller but resemble in appearance those of the related poison ivy (Rhus radicans), however this fragrant sumac is a totally non-poisonous plant.  Problems?  There aren't any and it's hardy to Z3.
FOUND AT BUD'S GREENHOUSE
The shrub, leaf detail and brilliant fall color!
For the 3rd year, no die back on my smokebush and it's blooming in
mid-August (over 2 months), still producing leaves & "smoke"???

As for the tree, it's just an amazing feat of man's imagination and nature working in perfect harmony.
Sometimes silence is louder than words.

This past week-end, a friend introduced me to the proprietors, Pat and Julie, of 'Spirit Rock Cafe' in Grand Marais BeDylan's in Grand Marais, before Grand Beach, is not just a small but wonderful, and oh so good, restaurant; what a unexpected expenditure of time and who would have thought to find it there?  It's a bit more than an hours drive out Hwy 59 or a few clicks away @ www.dylansimport.com (email @ dylansimport@hotmail.com).  I'm sure you'll be as delighted as I was finding beautiful objects from around the world tucked into a rustic cafe at the beach.  Enjoy!
